Why Does Ruth End with a Genealogy (Again)?
Jul 29, 2025
At first glance, the closing genealogy in Ruth 4 seems… unnecessary. We just learned that Ruth and Boaz gave birth to Obed — the grandfather of David. So why tack on a list of ten names tracing the line from Perez to David, especially when most of those names are never mentioned elsewhere?
But like a long, strategic pass in football — a Hail Mary thrown down the field — this list is part of something bigger. Genealogies in Scripture aren’t filler. They’re often the quiet climax, connecting God’s promises to real people across generations.
This ten-name list may seem obscure, but it’s the final move in Ruth’s story — and a key link in the line leading to Israel’s greatest king… and beyond him, to the Messiah Himself.
